Originally from Philadelphia, she majored in art at Dean College, Franklin, Mass., took classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York and apprenticed in needlepoint design with Nina Mortilitto, a famous designer on the upper East Side. The move to Hawaii more than 17 years ago infused her images with a gentle, sophisticated and whimsical approach with Rousseau-like color and pattern. The colorful paintings on this web site are from the brush of Karen Dougherty-Spachner. Inspired by the beauty of Hawaii, Karen is living her dream of painting in an open air studio. Her studio-home is surrounded by gardens of Hawaiian trees and flowers. Karens work continues to emerge as a true portrait of Hawaii, and enjoys capturing local beaches and historical sites. Karen inspires school children with her teaching and book illustrations, as well as with murals in the newly renovated Kona Community Hospital. Her fanciful designs reflect the islands beauty and warmth. As the Island of Hawaii grows from volcanic action, Karens work continues to emerge as a true portrait of Hawaii. Karens love of children has led her on the exciting adventure of illustrating children books. Keikilani the Konna Nightingale was her first delightful book with The Volcanoe Adventures of Keikelani is soon to be released. These are stories that every family will enjoy reading and sharing. One of Karens favorite activities is to created specialized pet portraits from your photos.
