Quality Craftsmanship & Experience - March “Tiger” Taylor has been building quality outrigger canoes since 1994. Starting with a mold from Walter Guild, then under a licensing agreement with Karel Tresnak, Tiger built the Horizon, Thunder, Viper, and Viper XL. Through this experience, Tiger gained a great deal of acquired knowledge and technology from renowned boat builders like Karel and Brent Bixler. However, the preponderance of his experience came from the painstaking process of building canoes himself and learning in the process. The two licensed affiliate builders of Tiger’s products are also held to the same standards of quality assurance. Design - Tiger Canoes have been designed for the discriminating paddler, for whom appearance, performance and quality are the most important factors. World champion paddler, Mark Rigg and Tahitian canoe builder, Jean Claude Brander teamed up with Tiger in 99 to design Tiger Canoe & Kayak’s first successful OC-1, the Ono. The hull was originally designed in Tahiti then brought to Hawaii where it was modified with surfing attributes. This started a new trend..... designing canoes to surf. The Kolea came next offering a slightly smaller canoe than the Ono with excellent surfing capabilities. Both canoes have their niche, and while designed to perform well in Hawaiis open-ocean surfing conditions, they were not necessarily ideal in flat water conditions. The next challenge came to design a canoe that would perform well in all conditions.....the boat all canoe builders strive for and the boat that all paddlers yearn for. Working again with Mark Rigg and shaper Dave Yap brought about the genesis of a new canoe. .. The Makia (meaning “ to strive for”). Knowledge - Ideas for the Makia, as well as the other canoes, came not only from Tiger and Mark but from a wide variety of champion paddlers whose input was invaluable in the design phase to improve and enhance canoe performance. Some of the paddlers providing conceptual design input were Thibert Lusiaa, Pat Erwin, Beanie Heen, Masepa Tanoai, Britt Craven and most recently Mike Judd. Locally Manufactured - Supporting local economies Tiger builds all his canoes in Hawaii, while canoes sold in Australia and the Mainland are built at those locations. Custom Canoes - Colors are pre-selected by the customer. Limited only by your imagination, elaborate designs are available as well as custom details that can be added upon request. Sport Involvement - Tiger and wife Jackie, a long time water sports enthusiast, are lifetime members of Kai Opua Canoe Club with over 30 years combined experience in the sport between them. Tiger began paddling surfskis 15 years ago and only recently has been able to competitively paddle his own canoes. In addition to designing and building canoes, Tiger does double duty providing support to wife Jackie helping with their two daughters as she worked and trained to steer the World Champion Kai Opua Womens Open crew for the past two years. Jackie was the first Sectretary of Hawaii Island Paddlesports Association and is still an active board member. One of the goals of Tiger Canoe & Kayak is to create an OC1 youth paddling program. The program recently gained a home and funding through the associations new canoe storage facility in Kona which is managed by Jackie for HIPA. TC&K annually sponsors a race for HIPA, and hopes to expand their support by sponsoring future races in other islands.
