Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a national organization with a network of more than 75,000 volunteers working through 125 Affiliates across the United States and three international Affiliates in Puerto Rico, Germany, and Italy. Credited as the nations leading catalyst in the fight against cancer, the Dallas-based foundation and its Affiliate volunteers deliver thelife-saving message of early detection to thousands of women and men and continue to lead the way in fund raising for breast cancer research and community outreach programs. Established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised more than 1 billion for the fight against breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure has become the Foundations signature fundraising event. Originating in Dallas in 1983 with 800 participants, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure now includes men, women and children of all ages and athletic abilities. It is an emotional and exhilarating event that gives women and their families an opportunity to support the fight against breast cancer in their communities, to remember those who have lost the battle, and to celebrate those who are surviving. The Race has also become the largest 5K run series in the nation with over 1.4 million participants in over 100 races in 2005 and is a nationally recognized sporting event in Runners World, USA Track and Field, McCalls and many other premier magazines and media outlets.
