The Contemporary Museum Honolulu in eList Hawaii Directory

The Contemporary Museums collection comprises approximately 1900 works in all media spanning 1940 to the present. Among the artists represented are Josef Albers, Mark Tobey, Sam Francis, Louise Nevelson, Jim Dine, Jasper Johns, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Arneson, Deborah Butterfield, Dennis Oppenheim, William Wegman, and Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. The collection also includes a large selection of works by artists of Hawaii. At present, the museum does not have a space where works from the permanent collection can be shown continuously, but exhibitions drawn from the collection are included periodically in the schedule of exhibitions. Sculptures from the museums collection by George Rickey, Charles Arnoldi, Tom Wesselman and other artists are installed in various locations on the grounds. A highlight of the collection is David Hockneys walk-in environment inspired by the Maurice Ravel opera, LEnfant et les Sortilges (The Child and the Enchantment), installed in the Milton Cades Pavilion.
