Marimed Foundation in eList Hawaii Directory
Marimed Foundation is a nonprofit corporation with a long history of serving Hawaii and the Pacific; growing and changing to meet the needs of our communities. Established in Hawaii in 1984, Marimed Foundation is a IRS 501(c)(3) public charity. Marimed delivers ocean and land-based learning experiences that empower youth and families and strengthen communities. Over the past 15 years, Marimed has provided a variety of residential day treatment and education services to “at-risk” Hawaii youth, see the “Programs” tab at the top of this page. Marimed Foundation owns and operates the sailing school vessel Makani Olu (Gracious Wind). The 96-foot three-masted staysail schooner is the central component of a successful experiential education and treatment program built around ocean voyaging. From Makani Olu’s home port in Kane ohe Bay on Oahu, “at-risk” youth participants - called cadets - make a series of six-day voyages throughout the Hawaiian Island chain. While learning to operate the sailing ship, the cadets learn marine, navigation and team-building skills.
