Kaohe Ranch Estates in eList Hawaii Directory

When CAPTAIN COOK and the HMS ENDEAVOR and HMS DISCOVERY made first landfall in Hawaii in 1778 it was at Kealakekua Bay, at Napoopoo, Big Island of Hawaii. Thousands of Hawaiians made this area, the Napoopoo Basin, their home. It was chosen, over the centuries, as residence of choice for the Kings and their most loyal subjects. Kaohe Ranch is located at the southern end of this basin, on a ridge looking north towards Kealakekua Bay and the fishing village of Kailua-Kona further to the North. The area is rich in history. Wild taro still grows in the upland areas. Poi, the staple of the Hawaiian diet, is made from taro. The fishing areas are legendary. Mark Twain, in the 1800s, took a fishing canoe from Kealakekua Bay south, past Kaohe, to the fishing village of Milolii. He wrote that the fish were literally jumping into the boat. The land along the coastline was divided into Ahupuaas, which were narrow strips stretching from the ocean (fishing area) to the uplands (farming) The King awarded the Ahupuaas to his chiefs. Each Ahupuaa was a self-sufficient village. The Ahupuaa at Kaohe had an extra attraction: Ili Ili Beach. Or, Pebble Beach in English. A small cove at the the foot of the hillside. A canoe landing. A rich fishing site. An ideal swimming site. And the location of a major village. An ancient trail wound its way up the mountainside, through Kaohe, from the beach to the highlands. The evidence of the trail are visible today, with rock walls and stone paths. The roadway at Kaohe, although now private and for use of property owners only, overlaps the trail in many places and is there just in case an ancient warrior or fisherman should need to pass this way again. Today, the rich land abounds with Papayas, Avocados, Orange and Lemon Trees, Vegetables of every kind, and, of course, Kona Coffee, one of the premier gourmet coffees of the world.
